Advertising display (courtship display) of Brandt's Cormorants (Phalacrocorax penicillatus), seabird of the Pacific coast of North America. The display called "flatter" followed by Williams (1942). The tail is cocked and spread. The feathers of the head and neck, together with the white filamentous plumes of that region, are decidedly ruffed out, giving a swollen effect. The picture was taken near La Jolla Cove, San Diego.
